Computer Science among the top three

Friday 8 May 2009

With four out of five possible green dots as an indicator of top rank, Computer Science at the Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences is among the top three universities of applied sciences in Germany and Austria, alongside Brandenburg and Hamburg (HAW).

Of the range of subjects taught our University, only Computer Sience was reassessed in the latest university ranking published by the Centre for Higher Education Development (CHE) in the recent Zeit Study Guide. The green, amber and red dots show quickly and clearly how a university is positioned in relation to its competitors - at least with respect to the assessment of facts about subsidies for research and publications and with reference to the ratings undertaken by students and professors.

According to the CHE, the survey covers up to 34 criteria per subject. Computer Science comprises roughly 20 criteria, which fall into the categories "Study Situation as a Whole", "Supervision", "IT Infrastructure", "Research Subsidies" and "Reputation" of professors. As far as reputation is concerned, Sankt Augustin has only attained an average rank to date. However, only four out of 92 universities of applied sciences received top ratings.

Ever since the last survey, which was conducted three years ago, the Department of Computer Science of the Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences has improved both with respect to supervision and to IT infrastructure. This confirms that the efforts undertaken by the Department were justified. Furthermore, the rankings for other study programmes offered by the Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences are mentioned in the Study Guide: Mechanical and Electrical Engineering (as per 2007), Technical Journalism, Business Administration and Business Informatics (as per 2008).
