Childcare
There are different forms of child minding:
- Children's day-care centres (Kindertagesstätte)
- Child day-care by minders (Kindertagespflege)
In each city, interested parents receive a list of childcare facilities. As a rule, it makes sense for parents to approach the children and youth welfare office (Kinder- und Jugendamt) of their place of residence. The "specialist advice centres for children’s day-care centres and day care" (Fachberatungsstellen für Kindertagesstätten und Kindertagespflege) help with finding childcare.

Children’s day care
A suitable alternative to child care in a children’s day-care centre is child day care (Kindertagespflege). Here, trained childminders (Tagesmütter/-väter) look after groups of up to five children.
The costs for child minding depends on the parents‘ income, which determines the statutory parents‘ contribution.
The contact persons are the specialist advice centres for day care in the children and youth welfare offices at the parents’ place of residence. Some towns also cooperate with external cooperation partners.
The children and youth welfare offices have a “pool” of qualified experts. When a placement is arranged through this institution there is the possibility of financial support. If the child is taken care of by a childminder who was not found and arranged via the children and youth welfare office, the parents usually are not entitled to claim financial support.
In some cases, neighbouring towns also find childminders. In this case the child welfare office of the own place of residence in exceptional cases will assume the proportional costs, if it was unable to offer a childminder itself.
