UniStem Day 2018 at H-BRS in Rheinbach

Monday 26 March 2018

Since 2009 the UniStem Day in the EU takes place in March each year. It is an event for the dissemination and outreach of stem cell science dedicated to high school students interested in natural sciences. In cooperation with Stem Cell Network North Rhine Westphalia, the international group of professor Edda Tobiasch again welcomed pupils in their lab to give them an insight in the field of current stem cell research methods.

After a mandatory safety instruction and an introduction in the current research from the PhD student Patrick Babczyk, who was also involved in this year’s organization, the attendees and their teacher started the practical part in the lab. Here the participants could get an insight into daily lab work and conducted hands-on experiments under the supervision of the Pakistani PhD student Sehrish Bano and the Estonian master student Juliana Baranova.

The performed experiments included a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for specific stem cell markers followed by a gel electrophoresis. Later the pupils specifically stained stem cells isolated from liposuction material and subsequent differentiated towards bone cells to verify the differentiation and evaluated the result using a microscope. At the end the attendees put their newly achieved knowledge to the test with a quiz.

Participating in the UniStem Day 2018 was an outstanding possibility for the pupils to get a closer insight in stem cell science and improve their knowledge. Possibly some of the attendees might be inspired for a later career in natural sciences, because Patrick Babczyk not only answered their curious questions about stem cell research, he also informed the young participants about study possibilities in the Department of Natural Sciences at H-BRS.
