Workshops underway in Ghana: Research and Education on Sustainable Land Management in Africa
Over the next two weeks the research group of the INTERFACES project meets partners and stakeholders in Ghana for two different workshops on the topic “Sustainable Land Management in Africa”.

New impulses for sustainability: Professor Helmsmüller joins the Directorate of the IZNE
Prof. Dr Simona Helmsmüller has been teaching at Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg (H-BRS) in the department of Social Policy and Social Security Studies with a focus on the Economics of Social Protection since 2019. She joined the International Centre for Sustainable Development (IZNE) in the winter semester 2024/25 as the fifth member of the directorate. We spoke to her about her new role, her experiences and goals, and what sustainable development means to her.

reTURN project: Pilot reactor for renewable fuels will go into operation in 2025
Our cooperation partner CAPHENIA from the research project “reTURN - Recycling organic residues and CO2 into fuels” has received the final part of the newly designed reactor, which will produce renewable fuels in the future. With Prof. Dr. Stefanie Meilinger, the International Center for Sustainable Development (IZNE) at Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences (H-BRS) is responsible for the the life cycle assessment of the construction and operation of the new reactor.

Agrarforschungstag NRW: Professor Martin Hamer moderiert Workshop über Bodenschutz
Am Donnerstag, den 29. August 2024, versammeln sich Expert:innen aus Forschung, Politik und Landwirtschaft zum Agrarforschungstag NRW 2024 in Düsseldorf. Ausgerichtet vom Ministerium für Landwirtschaft und Verbraucherschutz des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen soll es an diesem Tag um die Zukunft der Agrarwirtschaft gehen. Vom Internationalen Zentrum für Nachhaltige Entwicklung (IZNE) der Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg (H-BRS) wird Prof. Dr. Martin Hamer einen Workshop zum Thema „Bodenschutz“ leiten.

Optimising urban green spaces with AI: New "EcoTwin" research project started
In August the new research project "EcoTwin - Digital Twin of Urban Green Spaces" started at the International Center for Sustainable Development (IZNE) under the direction of Prof. Martin Hamer. The aim is to use artificial intelligence to manage and optimise urban green spaces more effectively and thus reducethe effects of climate change in urban areas. The project runs until 2027 and uses modern sensors to develop data-based, site-specific solutions for the optimisation of green spaces.

Erster Ergebnisworkshop des KLUGER Citizen Science Versuchs 2024
Am 25. Juni 2024 fand der erste Ergebnisworkshop des diesjährigen KLUGER Citizen Science Versuchs im Internationalen Zentrum für Nachhaltige Entwicklung der Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg statt. Die Versuchsteilnehmenden und das KLUGER Citizen Science Team, bestehend aus Martin Hamer, Samantha Antonini, Alexandra Gutmann und Laura Lelieveld-Fast, kamen zusammen, um die ersten Ergebnisse ihrer gemeinsamen Forschungsarbeit zu diskutieren.

Perspectives on funding transdisciplinary research for sustainable development in Africa
Numerous innovative ideas for strengthening public funding of transdisciplinary research projects (TDF) in Africa: The workshop organized by the International Centre for Sustainable Development (IZNE) brought together researchers, research funder and representatives of research networks and initiated an intensive exchange. The results will soon be published in an IZNE Working Paper.

Professor Stefanie Meilinger at the Week of the Environment in Berlin - Forum Hydrogen
On the occasion of the Week of the Environment, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and the DBU German Federal Environmental Foundation invited to Bellevue Palace in Berlin from 4 to 5 June 2024. Innovative environmental protection topics and projects were presented over the two days. This year, Prof Dr Stefanie Meilinger was there and spoke with other experts in the expert forum about the future of hydrogen.

KLUGER Education Team at the IEEE EDUCON 2024
In May, the team from the KLUGER Transfer research project - Education sub-project participated in the IEEE EDUCON Conference 2024. The event, organized by the IEEE Education Society, provided a platform for the exchange of innovative ideas and best practices in the field of engineering and science. Frank Dieball, research assistant at H-BRS, and his student assistants Florian Bahl and Philipp Kruppe represented the KLUGER Transfer research project on the island of Kos (Greece) and presented their interesting approaches to student-centered teaching.

Strong together: IZNE joins the Society for Transdisciplinary and Participatory Research (GTPF)
The International Centre for Sustainable Development (IZNE) at Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences recently took a significant step towards promoting transdisciplinary research by joining the Society for Transdisciplinary and Participatory Research (GTPF e.V.). The GTPF e.V. was founded in March 2023 as an association of transdisciplinary and participatory researchers in German-speaking countries.
