But was Social Media more effective than traditional media? Which other factors spurred the revolutions in the Arab world? What caused the victory, respectively the defeat in some North African and Arabian Peninsula countries? And what role does the media development stage play?
The conference aims to analyze the diversity of the structural, economic, legal and political dimensions of the media market in the Arab World and its influence on the political development.
The following two panels are intended to explore the theme of the conference.
Panel 1 "Regulation versus liberty: Media landscape transformation" will focus on the state and the development of the media market, the legal and economic situation and the future perspectives of the media in specific countries of the Arab world.
In Panel 2, "Social Media revolution and freedom of expression", the focus will be on the impact of Social Media on political mobilization and on the possibilities and hindrances of Social Media regarding the recent social processes in the Arab world.
The conference will be held in English. We invite international media and political scientists, economists, academic lawyers as well as journalists.
Submission of Papers
Please send your proposal for a 15-minute presentation to the DW-AKADEMIE (see e-mail below) as pdf- or doc-file. The abstract should not be longer than 6000 characters (including blank spaces) and should be assigned to one of the panels.
Submissions should be made in English. Please add a title page to your proposal containing the presentations title and the name(s) and address(es) of the presenter(s). Please add a short abstract which - in case of acceptance of your proposal - will be used for the program survey of the symposium.
Papers will be subject to review and submitters will be informed about the outcome of the selection process by February 29th, 2012.
All accepted proposals will be published in full length in the conference transcript.
Authors are encouraged to submit their abstracts/papers for consideration as posters, which they may present and discuss with other participants during the intermissions of the conference. The above conditions regarding the selection-process also apply for the poster session (see Submission of papers).
