Learning outcomes:

At the end of the lecture the students are able:

  • to know the most important molecular genetic processes in the cell, such as replication, regulation, variation, transcription, translation and expression, cell cycle and repair mechanisms
  • to know the most important molecular genetic events in gene technology
  • to judge ethical aspects of molecular genetics

  • Molecular structure and function of DNA and RNA
  • Replication, transcription and translation: Mechanisms and enzymes involved
  • Comparison of replication and gene expression in prokaryotes, eukaryotes and viruses: Similarities and differences
  • Regulation of gene expression in prokaryotes, viruses and eukaryotes
  • Variation and mutation
  • Repair mechanisms
  • The eukaryotic chromosome
  • The eukaryotic cell cycle
  • Mitosis and meiosis
  • Transposable elements
  • Profiling and polymorphisms
  • Gene technology as applied molecular genetic: Techniques,enzymes, application
  • Ethical aspects of molecular genetics
  • Composition, structure and reproduction of the most important virus families

Practical Course

Learning outcomes:

At the end of the laboratory course the students are able:

  • to isolate, characterise and analyse genomic and plasmid DNA
  • to perform bacterial gene transfer and bacteriophage titration

Content:

  • Bacterial Conjugation
  • Bacteriophage Titering
  • Isolation of Plasmid DNA by HiSpeed Plasmid Mini-Preparation
  • Determination and Characterisation of Plasmid DNA
  • Isolation of Human Genomic DNA from Buccal Swabs
  • Typing of Human Genomic DNA

Prerequisites

  • Enrolment in the 3. semester of the Applied Biology program at Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences.
  • Successful attendance of the General Safety Instructions (part of the Introduction Weeks [3], always in September/October) and the Special Safety Instructions (S1).
    Information For New Students: You have to attend these instructions before you are allowed to participate in any practical course of this university. Please ask for the dates in advance!

Recommendations:

  • Passing of the modules of the 1st and 2nd semester

Assessment

Successful participation in Written Exam and in Practical Course.

Written Exam: 70%
