International Dual Degree Program with York University (Bachelor)

Lassonde School of Engineering, York University, Toronto
A dual degree program is a study program for students seeking for an intensive international and intercultural experience. Two partner universities put together a study program from one of their degree programs each. Once the student has satisfied the requirements of both degree programs, they receive degrees from both universities

The dual degree program with York University is targetting students of the Bachelor Informatik (B.Sc.) at H-BRS and the undergraduate Specialised Honours BSc program in Computer Science at York University. In this program, H-BRS students transfer to York University after three semesters of study in Germany at the beginning of the summer term in Canada in April/May. There they study for a further year, during which they follow a defined study plan.

York University students spend their third year at the H-BRS. They also follow a defined study plan which, in addition to a series of courses, includes the H-BRS modules Practical Project and Bachelor's Thesis including Colloquium.

After recognition of the academic achievements according to the study plan (see document "Addendum"), the graduates each have a Canadian and a German Bachelor's degree.

Program Coordinators: Prof. George Tourlakis (York University),  Prof. Rainer Herpers (H-BRS)

Kontaktperson H-BRS: Nadine Kutz

FAQ for the Dual Degree Bachelor-Program at YorkU

Who can apply?

Applicants for the dual degree program must be enrolled in one of the following programs: Bachelor Informatik (B.Sc.) at H-BRS or the undergraduate Specialised Honours BSc program (120 credits) in Computer Science at York University.

What academic requirements do I have to fulfil?

At the time of starting the mobility, H-BRS students should have achieved a grade point average of at least 2.3 with at least 84 ECTS. York University students should have achieved at least 54 (Canadian) credits with a cumulative GPA of 6 before starting the mobility.

What language requirements do I have to fulfil?

Neither H-BRS nor York University students are required to provide a language certificate. It is the responsibility of the students and the program coordinators to ensure that candidates have sufficient language skills.

How many students can participate in one year?

There is no formal limit for admission to the double degree programme. Usually, the group of candidates consists of up to 5 students.

Do I have to pay tuition fees?

Students pay fees from their home institution, i.e. the university where you started the program. H-BRS students - as most students in Germany - pay no tuition fees. However, a Semester Contribution including a ticket for public transport and other services, will be charged from all students, including the incoming Canadian students, to guarantee that they can benefit from the subsidized meal plan and the public transport system.

York University charges a small, single-digit fee per course for course materials. International students must also enrol in the University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP).

How do I finance my stay abroad?

Please enquire with the program coordinators whether scholarships are available for the stay.

How do I apply for the program?

Since this is not a stand-alone degree programme, but a study plan that allows you to pursue two degree programs in parallel, you must apply for both degree programs separately. First, you will be enrolled in one of the two entry degree programs. Provided you meet the requirements for applying to the partner university, the nomination at the partner university will be made by the program coordinator of the first home university. H-BRS students contact the program coordinator at the end of the second semester. York students should contact the program coordinator in the winter term of their second year of study if they are interested.

What does the study program look like?

The typical course of study for students of H-BRS and York University is shown in the following document ("Addendum"). Deviations from this do not necessarily mean exclusion from the program. Please contact the program coordinator.
