Geovanny Giorgana, Master in Autonomous Systems

Originally from Mexico, Geovanny Giorgana is now a lecturer at the Universidad Anáhuac Mayab in Mérida. He came to Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg for the "Autonomous Systems" robotics degree programme and completed his Master's degree in 2011. During his studies, Giorgana took part in many RoboCup competitions in Austria, Singapore and China. Being part of the b-it-bots team at H-BRS was a particularly important experience for him, which contributed to his personal and professional development.

As a lecturer at the Universidad Anáhuac Mayab, Giorgana teaches subjects such as artificial intelligence, analogue and digital control theory, data communication and linking as well as circuit analysis: ‘I am not afraid to admit that many of the professional opportunities were only possible thanks to my studies at H-BRS.’

He sees a major challenge in creating interfaces between the university and the local private sector: ‘The development and management of various technology projects has meant that we are now able to combine theory with local practice very well.’ He hopes that his students will also experience practical and work-related situations. Above all, those who are majoring in mechatronics should understand and experience the various steps within a project.

During his studies at H-BRS, he was part of the b-it-bots team at H-BRS, which was of great benefit to him: ‘Today I can say that this experience really helped me to develop personally and professionally.’ His team won first prize three times, twice for the RoboCup German Open and once during the RoboCup World Championship.

Giorgana also spent almost a year as a research assistant at the Fraunhofer Institute IAIS in Bonn.  His last research and development project dealt with the design and development of customised iBeacon devices. Together with colleagues and lecturers, he published the article An Autonomous Service Robot for Domestic Environments in the Journal of Intelligent and Robotic Systems. For the RoboCup Symposium 2011, he wrote the article Facial Expression Recognition for Domestic Service Robots together with his professor and programme director Prof. Dr. Paul G. Plöger.
