Reliability Modeling and Residual Risks of Technical Systems

This course isoffered in close cooperation with the Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (IFA, www.dguv.de/ifa)

In today's technology reliability and safety gain increasing importance. Was it still possible to describe the behavior of simple electomechanical systems with deterministic models, the complex semiconductor technology increases the application of probabilistic methods especially with respect to reliable and safe systems. The lecture first introduces the reliability theory, in order to determine failure probabilities of technical systems on this background. The relevant sources of the reliability characteristics of components are described and the mathematical apparatus for the computation of the failure rates is taught. The modelling of modern technical systems by fault tree analysis, reliability block diagrams and Markov-models is presented by concrete technical examples. The restrictions of the respective model are clarified. The strength of the Markov modelling is worked out by several practical exercises. With the modelling both influences are considered, the hardware as well as the software. Finally, the vulnerability of programmable systems to cyber attacks is discussed.
