Summer School on Operating Systems

Prof. Kent holds his position as Honorary Professor at the Department of Computer Science at H-BRS since 2014. Coming from the University of New Brunswick he likes to visit his "second home" in late spring / early summer after a long Canadian winter. The Department is proud that he will be offering his course "Operating Systems" for the 4th time in May/June 2024.

Dates: May 2 - June 21, 2024 (tbc) 

Lectures: Mon - Thur  14:00 - 15:20 CEST (plus one hour lab (tbc))

First three weeks virtual / second three weeks in person at H-BRS

Instructor: Prof. Ken Kent

Language of instruction: English

Number of Credits: 6 ECTS  

 

This course is directed to undergraduate students in the fields of Computer Science or Computer Engineering or other fields of study. Prerequisites are C programming skills and basic knowledge on computer architecture. This offer is directed to students at the H-BRS Department of Computer Science as well as to students at our partner universities around the world. Please note that participation is restricted and admission will be granted based on capacity in the course and upon nomination by the partner university.

Content:

The course examines the fundamental role of an operating system in relation to the operation of applications. Essential theory of operating systems is covered, including processes, process synchronization, inter-process communications, process scheduling, storage (primary and secondary) management, resource sharing, security, I/O, and user interfaces. In addition to theory and concepts, specific implementation related information will be covered using the Linux Operating System and the C programming language.

In order to participate in the summer school, please get in contact with the person at your home department that is responsible for the cooperation with Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg. They should nominate candidates from their home institution for participation. If you need assistance from H-BRS, please contact Team International!
