Sustainable Innovations and Engineering: Made in Germany - Technologies and Innovations for Environmental Protection

'Made in Germany' is synonymous with quality products which are durable and reliable. This goes hand in hand with environmental protection and the goal of producing long lasting sustainable products. This summer school will bring together international and H-BRS students to learn about innovations and engineering technologies which contribute to environmental protection. Providing you with the chance to study in Germany with an international group of students interested in gaining skills and knowledge in sustainable innovations and technologies. The summer school will be held from the 7th-25th of August 2023.

Your International Summer Program

Lectures will introduce students to core theories underpinning subject specific approaches to environmental protection and are taught by staff from various departments including natural sciences, computer science, engineering, and management sciences, ensuring students gain multidisciplinary insights and a wholistic understanding of technologies and innovations for environmental protection.

Projects: At H-BRS, we are focused on giving students application-oriented knowledge and practical experience so that they are equipped with the skills and applied knowledge needed to handle the complex challenges facing all of us. Afternoon sessions focus on practical projects where students will directly apply methodologies and subject specific tools developing their skills, creativity and teamwork. International student teams will collaborate together and apply their knowledge, students can select two projects, one from each of the project sessions.

Cultural Program: Along with the academic program you will enjoy a cultural program through which you will gain insights into German history and culture and see the sights of the Bonn-Rhine-Sieg region. The cultural program will include excursions and tours of Bonn, Cologne, and the surrounding region. Through these excursions and events, the summer school aims to build connections between German students and students from all over the world, sharing knowledge, experiences and expanding your network of engaged and like-minded people.

Entry Requirements

The international summer school is open to students of all backgrounds and study programs. It is open to undergraduate students in the later years of their program and master students.

An English language proficiency test is not required. However, we recommend a self-evaluation of your English language to a level of B2/C1.

Application and deadlines

The application deadline has now passed. There are a limited number of places available for H-BRS or local students. Should you wish to attend please get in touch via email io.summerschoo@h-brs.de

Programme fee

The programme fee includes: Tuition, project material and the cultural programme

  • International Students - 800 euros
  • Students from partner universitites - 600 euros
  • H-BRS Students - 200 euros

Following your registration and acceptance you will receive further information with payment details. Payment must be received within two weeks after you have been issued with an invoice. Your place in the program is only confirmed once we have received the full payment.

Participants are responsible for their personal expenses for meals, groceries, and other expenses during their stay. Accident and health insurance are also the personal responsibility of participants.

Scholarship for H-BRS Students

H-BRS students can apply for a full scholarship for the tuition fee. These students will act as tutors for the international students and will actively participate in the support and intercultural exchange with the international students. Should you wish to apply, please send with the application your transcript of records with an average grade and a motivation letter to participate as a tutor.

Refund policy

If you are unable to attend due to unforeseen circumstances a refund is possible until the 15th of June. Bank transfer charges will be at the expense of the participant. After the 15th of June a refund is no longer possible.

Accommodation

For visiting students we can reserve a room in a student dormitory. The dormitory is run by Studierendenwerk. Accommodation will be coordinated by H-BRS and you do not need to directly apply to Studierendenwerk. The accommodation will be private single rooms with shared kitchen and bathroom. The costs is 460 euros . This includes a dorm set with basic utensils such as bedding and essential kitchen equipment. 

If you would prefer hotel accommodation please get in touch and we can provide you with some recommendations.

Credits and Certificates

For H-BRS students:

The number of ECTS points students receive depends on the examination regulations (Prüfungsordnung) of the respective programme that the student is enrolled in. However, the amount of time spent on the course usually corresponds to 3 ECTS. More details will follow

For international students:

Students wishing to obtain credits will work in small groups to submit a paper on a topic covered during the course. Attendance and successful completion of the paper are required to obtain the Certificate of Participation. The recognition at the home university must be checked individually. Participating students will receive a Certificate of Participation after successfully completing the course.

About the Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences

Founded in 1995, the Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg is a dynamic and research-oriented university of applied sciences. Students follow practice-oriented courses of study based on current research findings in around 40 degree programs. Research at H-BRS is also conducted intensively and in a hands-on manner - numerous research institutes cover a wide range of topics from detection technologies, genetics, sustainable development, resource conservation, security research or visual computing.

Bonn-Rhein-Sieg Region

Located in the central west of Germany and in the heart of western Europe, the Bonn-Rhein-Sieg region is just a short train ride away from European neighbours and has great access to all of Germany. The city of Bonn is full of history, dating back to the Romans, it has played a significant role in post war German history. From 1949 to 1990 Bonn was the capital of Western Germany. As a result, the ‘Small’ city has a very international flair and hosts over 20 United Nations organizations and is the UN headquarters for sustainable development issues.

Sustainability at H-BRS University of Applied Science

The topic of sustainability has had a central place in the university development plans over the last 15 years. The success of the university's orientation towards sustainability is reflected in a wide range of modules, study programmes, research institutes and projects of various kinds. This also includes green campus concepts on the premises, in the buildings and in the other infrastructures. Aspects of sustainability will be taken up and expanded in the coming years in the core areas of teaching, research and transfer as well as in the design of infrastructures, buildings and processes. One of the goals is to ensure that all students are familiarized with general and subject-specific aspects of sustainability in their degree programmes and courses.
