Journey of discovery to student projects
The small submersible remained bubbling at the bottom of the aquarium instead of resurfacing after 30 seconds. Sebastian Drumm, professor at the Department of Engineering and Communication, had prepared a small challenge together with his students: Several teams had built submersibles out of plastic bottles, which had to resurface independently within a set time with the help of a pneumatic control system. Not a trivial task, as it turned out, as one or two of the constructions proved unwilling to return to the surface, at least at the first attempt, as the students had hoped. Not a tragedy for Professor Drumm, who sees this as a valuable learning experience
There were many practical projects like this to see at the "Open Project Day", which attracted many prospective students to the Sankt Augustin campus in parallel to the study information day. Students from the Departments of Engineering and Communication and Computer Science showed and explained to visitors the practical tasks they have been working on during the semester. Their models, experimental set-ups and workpieces reflected the diversity of the courses on offer - there were films produced in the university's own television studio, moving robots, computer games they had developed themselves and much more.
The Student Information Day was opened by Professor Peter Muck in his capacity as Vice President of Studies and Teaching in Lecture Hall 1, the university's largest lecture hall. The opening was followed by a presentation by the General Student Advisory Service on "Application, enrolment and starting your studies". The laboratories then opened for the "Open Project Day". Various university contact points were available throughout the day at an advice market to answer individual questions about studying - including the Student Advisory Service, all five departments, the Language Centre and the International Office. Also on site were a number of foundations with their offers for student financing through scholarships, the Bonn Student Union, the Employment Agency and the Supplementary Independent Participation Counselling Service for students with disabilities. The university and district library was also open and could be explored on a library tour.
