The STEM Racing Team Saturn was founded in September 2024 at Städtisches Gymnasium Hennef. The five pupils compete against other teams in the STEM racing competitions, in which they send gas-powered mini racing cars that they have designed and built themselves onto the racetrack. The team is supported by the Formula Student Team BRS Motorsport and members of the Department of Natural Sciences at Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg, among others.

What is STEM racing?

STEM racing is a competition for school pupils that integrates interdisciplinary teaching content. The teams design their own miniature racing cars on the computer using a 3D CAD system, build them and then send them onto the race track.

The cars, which are powered by gas cartridges, compete against each other on a 20-metre track in regional competitions and national championships.

Admission to the championship is open to students aged 11 to 19 years.

The competitions are judged on team performance in terms of design, production, reaction time, vehicle speed, business plan and digital presentation. The teams also have to find sponsors who, for example, print the components of the mini cars on a 3D printer.

Team Saturn and Team BRS Motorsport

The five students of Team Saturn have already won the Western Regional Championship (NRW, Hesse, Netherlands). They will go on to the German Championship in May. Participation in STEM racing competitions is already a tradition at the Hennef school. In the past, there were also successful teams that took part in the competitions, which were then known as F1 in Schools. Some high school graduates and former STEM Racing team members have also enrolled at Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg and then switched to the successful Formula Student Team BRS Motorsport.

So it is not surprising that there is a partnership between the two teams and that the motorsport experts from the university are on hand to provide advice and support to the five members of Team Saturn. The young team is also supported by lecturers from the Sustainable Chemistry and Materials degree programme, such as Professor Christian Dresbach
