Successfull Delegation Trip to Strategic Partner University of Cape Coast

A delegation of eight representatives from Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg (H-BRS) visited its strategic partner, the University of Cape Coast (UCC) in Ghana, for a week of exchange, networking and joint planning.

The delegation brought together representatives from different departments and central units of H-BRS: Prof. Teena Hassan (VP International Affairs und Digitalisation and Prof. in FB02); Dr. Barbara Hillen-Haas (Central Equal Opportunity Officer); Nadja Geldmacher (Third Party Funds Manager/Vice Chair Senate); Nelli Eurich (CEO/Research Management Institute of Visual Computing); Paulina Hinz (IO); Prof. Ralf Meyer (Prof. in FB01); Prof. Susanne Keil (Prof. & Vice-dean in FB03); Prof. Toni Loh (Prof. in Applied Ethics). The group represented not only the diversity of cooperation areas but also the highly demanded expertise on AI and new technologies. Throughout the week, the delegation held numerous meetings with academics, staff and representatives of different units at UCC. The discussions focused on learning more about the strengths and challenges of both institutions, identifying common areas of interest and exploring concrete opportunities for future cooperation.

The programme also included information sessions on study opportunities at H-BRS and funding opportunities for internationalisation. In addition, members of the delegation delivered an interdisciplinary workshop on artificial intelligence, bringing together perspectives from business, computer science and ethics. The workshop sparked lively discussions and demonstrated the participants’ strong interest in the topic. Questions ranged from practical applications, such as the use of AI in cancer research, to broader questions about the social and ethical implications of artificial intelligence.

Beyond the academic and strategic discussions, the warmth and hospitality of the University of Cape Coast left a particularly strong impression on the delegation. The visit highlighted that successful international partnerships are about more than agreements and joint projects: they are built on trust, mutual respect and genuine personal connections.

Vice President Teena Hassan was particularly impressed by the spirit of the partnership and the warm welcome received at UCC. Reflecting on the experience, she said: “In body, mind and soul, it felt that we are part of the University of Cape Coast family.” The sense of belonging and mutual appreciation was a defining element of the visit and reflects the special relationship between the two institutions.

During the final strategic meeting with the UCC International Office and Provost Daniel Agyapong, the areas of common interest and cooperation ideas identified throughout the week were brought together and prioritised. Promising ideas included the development of a dual-degree programme in International Business, the organisation of a joint hackathon in Computer Science, reciprocal guest lectures across various academic fields, and the development of a Sexual Harassment Policy at H-BRS based on the existing policy at the University of Cape Coast.

The delegation’s programme also included activities beyond the university, such as visits to Elmina Castle and Kakum National Park. These experiences allowed the participants to gain a more holistic understanding of Ghanaian culture, nature and society. During the final visit to the DAAD Regional Office in Ghana, the delegation had the opportunity to learn more about current funding opportunities from Lena and Felix and to discuss specific ideas for future cooperation, in particular potential support for the German Club at UCC.

Whether it was the regular enjoyment of tonic water, the deliciously spiced meals or the good spirits despite a packed programme – all members of the delegation returned safely to the Rhineland, bringing home many positive memories and impressions.

As a next step, the members of the delegation and further colleagues will be brought into contact to develop the individual ideas further and initiate concrete steps towards implementation. The delegation visit has therefore not only strengthened the existing strategic partnership, but also laid the foundation for numerous new joint projects.
