Bonn Media Festival: H-BRS invites visitors to a news studio
In front of the camera rather than in front of the telly: at the Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg’s studio at the b.future festival, visitors can switch perspectives and have a go at being a newsreader. Just like in a real television studio, participants stand in front of the green screen and read a short news script from the teleprompter as soon as the camera’s red light comes on. At the same time, the technology superimposes a virtual news studio behind the footage. As a memento of their appearance, all participants will receive a USB stick containing the recording. The try-it-out studio can be found on Saturday 3 October, from 10 am to 4 pm, in the Haus der Bildung (Room 1.60).
“What makes the b.future Festival special is that journalism isn’t just discussed here – it can also be experienced first-hand. Presenting a news item on camera often looks easier than it is. Anyone who stands in front of the teleprompter themselves quickly realises just how much journalistic skill goes into a professional performance,” says Professor Tanja Köhler, who heads the Digital Journalism and Audiovisual Media department at the H-BRS. “With our news studio, we want to bring this to life and, at the same time, show just how much fun it is to try out journalistic formats for yourself. It is precisely this combination of journalistic craft, media technology and practical experience that also sets our training programme at Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg apart.”
The university also provides information about its range of media degree programmes. The central question here is how storytelling works in the digital age. For example, the university offers the Master's degree programme in ‘Digital Communication and Media Innovation’ at its Sankt Augustin campus. This programme is aimed at aspiring journalists and career changers with professional experience. In addition, there is the Master's degree programme in ‘International Media Studies’, which is aimed at aspiring journalists from all over the world. The Bachelor’s degree programme in “Digital Journalism and Technology” teaches the fundamentals of the media system and journalistic practice. The Bachelor’s degree programme in “Visual Technical Communication” equips students to present complex technical subjects.
Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg has its own TV and radio studios, which offer state-of-the-art technical equipment for creating professional audio and video productions.
