More than 1,900 new students have enrolled at Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg (H-BRS) for the 2026/27 Winter semester. This means that the number of first-year students remains stable compared with the average for previous years. The expected decline in first-year student numbers due to the absence of a school-leaving year in North Rhine-Westphalia has not materialised. “Our enrolment figures are absolutely excellent,” says Professor Peter Muck, Vice President Teaching and Learning. A good 80 per cent of new students at H-BRS are starting a Bachelor’s degree, whilst just under 20 per cent are embarking on a Master’s degree.

“We are committed to high-quality teaching and offer a practical, modern and forward-looking degree programme: with lecturers who are experts in higher education pedagogy, with degree programmes that meet current and relevant needs, and ‘Future Skills’ modules that are a compulsory part of all bachelor's degree programmes alongside subject-specific teaching,” emphasises Muck.

Almost 100 per cent capacity utilisation

The persistently high demand for a place at the H-BRS and the almost 100 per cent capacity utilisation, despite the absence of a school-leaving year in North Rhine-Westphalia, can also be explained by structural factors: As a university of applied sciences, the H-BRS particularly appeals to prospective students through alternative entry routes, such as the subject-restricted higher education entrance qualification. Added to this are A-level graduates from previous years and from federal states other than North Rhine-Westphalia – the H-BRS’s location is particularly attractive to prospective students from Rhineland-Palatinate.

Two new degree programmes are proving popular

“We are delighted that we have been able to convince so many prospective students of the merits of our programmes,” says the Vice-Chancellor. The bachelor's degree programmes in Business Management, International Business, Business Psychology, Cyber Security & Privacy, Digital Journalism and Technology, Applied Biology and Forensic Science were in particularly high demand for the 2026/27 Winter semester. The H-BRS is constantly developing its range of degree programmes. New additions to the programme this year include the bachelor's degree programme in Sustainable Industrial Engineering and the Master's degree programme in Business Informatics, Sustainability and Digitisation, both of which have been very well received.

Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg offers around 40 practice-oriented degree programmes at its campuses in Sankt Augustin, Rheinbach and Hennef. In total, more than 9,000 students are enrolled.
