What are we looking for?

We are looking for ideas that address both a specific sustainability issue and a customer problem, and offer a compelling solution to both. This could be, for example:

  • a (technological) innovation to tackle environmental or social challenges,
  • a sustainable product or service with a clear impact,
  • a business model centred on impact and the common good.

It is crucial that you are able to present the sustainability and customer issue you are addressing, the solution you have developed and the expected impact in a clear and comprehensible manner.

What you can win

  • 1st Prize: €2,500
  • 2nd place: €1,500
  • 3rd place: €750
  • Exclusive pitch coaching for all finalist teams

In addition, you’ll gain visibility, feedback and access to a strong network of universities, experts and supporters.

Who can take part

  • Individuals or teams from Bonn or the Rhein-Sieg district with an idea that serves the public good
  • Students, alumni and staff of Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg, Alanus University or the University of Bonn

A team will be excluded from the competition if it has already been established or has commenced business operations (see EXIST’s definition of business activity).

How to apply

Applications must be submitted in the form of a pitch deck comprising a maximum of 14 slides. The deck will be read and assessed as a standalone application – without any additional live presentation. Therefore, all content should be clear, structured and to the point. The pitch deck may be submitted in German or English. The deadline for submissions is 20 September.

This should go in the pitch deck

The pitch deck will be assessed as a standalone application. All relevant information should therefore be presented in a clear and comprehensible manner. The following topics should be included:

When creating your pitch deck, please bear the following points in mind:

  • Sustainability issue: Which environmental, social or societal problem does your idea address?
    • Environmental: e.g. greenhouse gas reduction, biodiversity, circular economy, resource reduction, other planetary boundaries, etc.
    • Social/Societal: e.g. health, education, peace, justice/equality, social fairness, poverty, political participation, etc.
  • Sustainability impact: How does your idea contribute to solving the sustainability problem, and to what extent is this at the heart of the business model? How could the impact be measured or verified; what assumptions are made?
  • Business idea:
    • Customer problem and target audience: What customer problem are you solving for which target audience?
    • Solution to the customer problem: How does your offering solve the customer problem described?
    • Market and competition: How big is the target market, and which competitors are active there?
    • Level of innovation: How does your idea differ from existing solutions?
  • Conflicting objectives: Does your idea result in a negative environmental or social impact (elsewhere)? How will this be addressed?
  • Economic viability: What financial resources do you need to implement this? How can these needs be met in the short, medium and long term?
  • Team: What relevant skills does your team possess? How can you address any skills gaps?

It’s well worth taking part!
