Personalised Campus Day
During a Campus Day, school classes and groups from Year 8 onwards can gain a comprehensive insight into everyday student life on campus. The programme for a Campus Day is tailored to each group’s specific needs – depending on date, group size, available time, interests and level of knowledge – and agreed with you, subject to availability. The programme may include a presentation providing general information about studying at H-BRS, a sample lecture, a tour of a laboratory, a workshop, a guided tour of the district and university libraries, a lunch at the university canteen, a chance to chat with students, a tour of the campus and other activities.
We recommend planning a campus day during the semester break. Direct interaction with students is usually possible even then, and the lecture content can be tailored to the needs and level of knowledge of the school group. During term time, it is often only possible to attend current lectures (from higher semesters), which may prove challenging for the visiting pupils, depending on the topic currently being covered in their curriculum.
Study Information Day
At H-BRS Study Information Days in January (Sankt Augustin Campus) and May (Rheinbach Campus), interested school pupils can find out all about the range of degree programmes on offer at H-BRS.
Through presentations, taster lectures and laboratory visits, the departments and the Student Advice Centre provide a wide range of information on the bachelor's degree programmes, as well as support in choosing a course of study and the opportunity to clarify individual queries relating to university studies.
Taster Days | Applied Natural Sciences
Once again, likely during the Easter holidays, school pupils aged 16 and over who are interested can spend a taster day in the Department of Natural Sciences. During the taster day for the ‘Applied Biology’ bachelor's degree programme, general information about university life and the degree programme will be provided. The programme also includes a taster lecture, and practical courses in the laboratory will cover initial topics relevant to the degree programme.
The “Sustainability of Chemistry and Materials” degree programme also offers an informative and varied taster course. Through sample lectures and practical courses in the laboratory, interested school pupils gain a realistic impression of what everyday student life will be like. Staff from the department are also on hand to answer individual questions about the degree programme and career prospects.
Day of Open Project | Department of Engineering and Communication
The Bachelor’s degree programmes in Engineering and Communication are structured according to the ‘four-one’ model: four weeks of lectures are followed by a practical project week, during which students apply what they have learnt in theory directly in practice.
At the Day of Open Project, held on the last day of lectures of the semester, the digital, engineering and media projects that have been developed are showcased – prospective students in particular will gain a good insight into what the various degree programmes are like in practice and will be able to discuss questions about studying with students and lecturers.
Towards the end of the Summer semester, the Department of Engineering and Communication offers a range of hands-on activities for school classes in the week leading up to the Day of Open Project.
Projects to support girls in STEM degree programmes | Equality Opportunities Office
One of the aims of the H-BRS’s current gender equality strategy is to increase the proportion of female students on STEM degree programmes. Schoolgirls and non-binary children and young people can explore the subjects of technology and computer science in a relaxed atmosphere during project days on various topics.
The unique “GIRLS DO IT” project – the Girls’ STEM Year, organised in collaboration with the Rhein-Sieg district – aims to support female pupils in Years 8 to 10 in the fields of mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology, and to inspire them to pursue careers and studies in these areas through workshops, excursions and projects.&
In the holiday programme (summer and autumn) GETtogether – Girls explore technics together, schoolgirls in Years 5 to 7, as well as those from Year 8 onwards, take part in a project lasting several days and learn, through their own tinkering and experimentation, just how exciting the fields of technology and computer science can be.
The Equality Office also coordinates bespoke project days for schoolgirls, during which STEM topics are also explored.
UniStemDay | Applied Natural Sciences
UniStem Day is an international education day designed to inspire school pupils to take an interest in stem cell research. The H-BRS regularly takes part in this event in the spring and offers pupils on advanced biology courses an exciting programme in the lecture theatre and in the laboratory. Participants gain an insight into how work is carried out in the laboratory and can find out about science degree programmes at the H-BRS.
Save the Date: 12 March 2027
Robot Night and RoboCup Junior | Computer Science, Engineering and Communication
Robot Night has been taking place at the H-BRS since 2011 and is aimed at pupils in Years 5 to 13. Under the guidance of Professor Irene Rothe, the participating teams build and programme a robot within 24 hours. The final competition on an obstacle course (and, of course, the prize-giving ceremony!) is the highlight of the event.
Save the Date: provisionally June 2027
Since 2010, the H-BRS has hosted one of the nine qualifying tournaments for the RoboCup Junior, the largest international robotics competition. The best teams qualify for the German Championship. The event is organised by the Christophorusschule Königswinter.
Save the Date: provisionally January/February 2027
Girls’ Day and Boys’ Day
For many years now, the H-BRS has been taking part in the nationwide action day with a wide range of activities. Whilst girls can try their hand at technology, science and computer science, boys have the opportunity to take a look at what it’s like to work in a library or get a taste of business psychology.
Save the Date: 22 April 2027
Study Orientation Work Placement
As part of their academic and career guidance, pupils can undertake work placements at the university lasting one or more days. The programme for each placement day is tailored to the individual’s interests in specific degree programmes and is usually arranged directly with the pupils concerned.
Programme for early-entry students
A programme for young students is already in place in the Departments of Computer Science and Management Sciences: as part of the programme to support talented students, motivated school pupils can attend university courses whilst still at school. They can also take the exams – the credits earned will be taken into account when they enrol on a degree programme at H-BRS.
Careers Exploration Day
At H-BRS, pupils in Years 8 and 9 can take part in a career exploration day (a standard component of career guidance under the KAoA). The content is tailored to each department and subject to availability.
Children’s University in the Rhein-Sieg district
This interactive series of lectures is aimed at children aged between 8 and 12, who will learn about fascinating topics from the worlds of research and science in a fun and engaging way.
