Programme content and qualification objective

The Bachelor's programme in Computer Science provides practical and scientifically sound training for the digital future. The first three semesters focus on methodological and mathematical fundamentals, analytical and algorithmic thinking, programming, system development, databases and networked systems. Building on this foundation, students deepen their knowledge of modern programming languages, software engineering and networks. A wide range of specialisations, such as data science, cyber-physical systems, information security, complex software systems, networks and visualisation, or visual computing, enable students to develop their own individual profiles and prepare them for various career fields in computer science. A module overview provides detailed information on all course content. The language of instruction is German, but English language skills are required.

Course structure

The standard duration of the Bachelor's programme is six semesters. The first half of the programme focuses on analytical, formal-abstract and algorithmic thinking as well as the theoretical and technical fundamentals of computer science.

As the programme progresses, students deepen their knowledge of software engineering, networks, IT security, artificial intelligence and machine learning, apply this knowledge in a computer science project and also choose a specialisation.

Exams take place at the end of the semester, after the courses have been completed and before the new semester begins.

Prospects and job opportunities

The ongoing digitalisation of the economy and society opens up a wide range of attractive career paths for graduates of this programme. From software development and IT security to data science, anything is possible. As long as computers exist, you will be needed and in demand.

Building on the bachelor's degree, the department offers the following master's programmes:

  • Computer Science
  • Business Informatics, Sustainability and Digitalisation
  • Autonomous Systems
  • Cyber Security & Privacy
  • Game Technologies

The university's start-up factory provides support for founding your own company.

Practical relevance and teaching formats

The bachelor's programme includes a 10- to 12-week practical project. The practical project usually begins immediately after the lecture period of the fifth semester. This gives you the opportunity to put the knowledge and skills you have acquired during your studies to the test in the professional world. You are responsible for finding a company, research institution or public authority that is relevant to your chosen topic. This often leads to valuable contacts for your bachelor's thesis or your career start after graduation.

Study location and learning environment

The Sankt Augustin campus of Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg is conveniently located in North Rhine-Westphalia and is easily accessible from Cologne, Bonn, Düsseldorf and Koblenz. Modern facilities, short distances and open exchange between students and lecturers create a personal and motivating learning atmosphere. In the study workshop, students support each other in joint learning, practical exchange and successful study results. The university also has excellent links with industry, business and administration and cooperates with around 90 international partner universities in over 40 countries.
