The Bachelor's degree programme in Sustainable Engineering Science (BEng) combines mechanical and electrical engineering with aspects of sustainability. In particular, the programme focuses on renewable energies, energy efficiency and environmental engineering. As a dual degree programme, it combines study with in-company training and leads you to a professional qualification and a degree after four and a half years.

Programme content and qualification objective

The degree programme combines content from the traditional electrical engineering and mechanical engineering degree programmes and supplements these with topics relating to sustainable development. The focus is on future issues relating to the energy transition, resource conservation and mobility. In addition to sound engineering expertise, social skills, interdisciplinary problem-solving strategies and design expertise are among the key training objectives. Graduates are qualified to work purposefully on solving important future tasks. They can take responsibility for technical solutions because they can assess and categorise their effects. The programme is taught in German. The Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) degree is awarded on successful completion of the programme.

Course structure

In the first two semesters, students complete practical vocational training in the company. The on-campus programme starts in the third semester. The following seven semesters correspond to the regular Bachelor's degree programme in Sustainable Engineering (BEng), where students learn the basics of engineering and natural sciences. Topics such as renewable energies and ethics create the basis for an understanding of sustainability. In addition, students complete an internship semester in a cooperating company. The degree programme concludes with the Bachelor's thesis and colloquium.

Prospects and job opportunities

The close relationship with the employer where the in-company training takes place promises excellent career opportunities in this company. The training contract guarantees an income while studying. Graduates are qualified for many sectors. Careers in the field of energy generation and distribution as well as jobs in industrial companies, planning offices and in the energy and mobility sectors are all possible.

H-BRS offers a Master's degree programme Sustainable Engineering Science (M.Eng.) or alternatively Electrical Engineering (M.Eng) and Mechanical Engineering (M.Eng.).

Practical relevance and teaching formats

The dual study programme combines practical teaching with vocational training. In order to transfer what has been learned directly into application, the degree programme includes:

  • laboratory internships in which, for example, renewable energies are tested and life cycle assessments are created.
  • three project weeks per semester, which alternate with four weeks of lectures and offer students the opportunity to work on projects in small teams during their studies.
  • an internship semester in Germany or abroad, which takes place in the cooperating company
  • a final thesis, which is written in the cooperating company.

Locations and learning environment

The city of Sankt Augustin with the university campus borders the city of Bonn to the north-east. The state university is easy to reach by public transport from Cologne, Bonn, Düsseldorf or Koblenz. The campus is modern and the classrooms, laboratories, workshops and library are excellently equipped. Small study groups enable good contact with other students and lecturers. The university is well networked and cooperates with around 90 foreign universities in more than 40 countries.
