Challenging courses and a great experience

Xiaohan Li and Hu Haosong from China spent one semester at the Department of Business Administration.

We always had in mind to study in Germany for a period of time as it is one of China’s most important trading partners and because it is located in the centre of Europe. Due to the intense relationship between Hunan University and Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg we knew that the level of education is really high in this country. The good rankings of the Department of Business Administration made us choose Rheinbach as the place to spend our semester abroad.

We were welcomed by our “study buddies” who were with us from the beginning onwards. On the day of arrival they picked us up at the central station and brought us to our dormitory. During the first days they introduced us into the city of Bonn, showed us the university and helped us with the administrative procedures. Whenever we had questions we could approach them and they were always friendly and helpful.

One thing that immediately struck us was the clean environment in Germany. That’s one reason why we like living in Bonn. The city is not crowded but you get anything you need for living and there are even lots of possibilities to go out at night. Downtown Bonn there are also lots of Asia markets so that we could get Asian food. Being provided with several kitchens, we could easily cook Asian meals in our dormitory as well.

We also were really excited about the location of the university as it is surrounded by beautiful landscape and there’s even a small lake on the campus.

Courses at the university were really challenging and in the beginning we even thought it would be too hard for us but the more we got used to it, the better it worked. We are used to crowded universities in China with a large number of students attending the courses. At Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg we luckily enjoyed small learning groups in the seminars and the lecturers encouraged us to participate actively. They even gave us personal feedback which is not possible in China due to the large number of students.

During our studies in Germany we could really improve our soft and rhetorical skills as we did a lot of presentations. As a whole, the style of education was rather different compared to our home country. We did a lot of research on our own, learned how to work in a team and we were always self-responsible for the results of our work. This is what made us gain a real advantage over students that stay in Asia for their studies.

Besides our studies we, of course, got to know a lot of new friends both from Germany and other countries. All in all the semester at Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg was a great experience for us that really shaped our personalities.
