Library media classification system

The media in the library are arranged systematically, i.e. according to content, and are placed on the shelves accordingly. Each medium is given a shelfmark, which is written on the spine of the book or media and indicates its respective place on the shelf.

How to find your desired medium in the library:

Example of a signature: 11 = PIF23-2(3)+4

The first two numbers indicate the location and the borrowing status:

11 = Sankt Augustin, ausleihbar

12 =  Sankt Augustin, nicht ausleihbar

17 = Sankt Augustin, Audiothek (Sachhörbücher) ausleihbar

21 = Rheinbach, ausleihbar

22 = Rheinbach , nicht ausleihbar

27 = Rheinbach, Audiothek (Sachhörbücher), ausleihbar

31 = Sankt Augustin, Literaturkabinett (Romane), ausleihbar

37 = Sankt Augustin, Hörbücher im Literaturkabinett, ausleihbar

41 = Rheinbach, Literaturkabinett (Romane), ausleihbar

47 = Rheinbach, Hörbücher  im Literaturkabinett, ausleihbar

The sequence of letters after the location indicates the subject classification of the media. It consists of three or four letters and ranges from AAA-ZZZ. Each letter combination stands for a specific subject area (in our example: PIF = Economics). By listing them by subject area, books of related content are grouped together. An overview of the contents of a shelf can be found at the beginning of the shelf. Further information on the individual subject areas can be found in the classification system "GHBS-Systematik".

The numbers behind the letters - in our example 23-2(3)+4 - have the following meaning:

23 = Sequence number for a title within a subject group, this determines the exact location of the medium on the shelf.

(2) = volume number (for multi-volume works)

(3) = edition (the edition of a work with the highest edition number is the most recent in the library's holdings)

+4 = copy number (for books that are available in the library more than once)
