Five questions for Dr Johanna Mack

What are you working on as part of your tandem?

My research focuses on diversity in journalism, particularly with regard to social background and classism. In addition, my research and teaching focus on current developments in journalism, such as disinformation, populism and changes in media systems.

What are your aims for the tandem?

The tandem offers me the opportunity to further develop my teaching experience whilst also expanding my research portfolio. Another key aim is to strengthen collaboration between the H-BRS and the DW Academy and to incorporate international perspectives even more strongly into teaching and research.

What does your work at the H-BRS involve specifically?

At the H-BRS, I teach on the bachelor's degree programmes in Visual Technical Communication and Digital Journalism and Technology, as well as on the Master's degree programme in Digital Communication and Media Innovation. In terms of content, I focus in particular on media systems and international journalism. In addition, I am conducting research together with Prof. Dr Tanja Köhler on the topic of classism in journalism.

How do you collaborate with the DW Akademie?

My industry partner is the DW Akademie in Bonn, which is active in the field of international media development cooperation. There, I work in the Advocacy, Research & Public Affairs team and focus primarily on research into current key issues in media development cooperation.

The DW Akademie’s think tank analyses current challenges and upheavals in the sector, particularly in relation to artificial intelligence and the financial crisis facing journalism. This gives rise to studies, strategic perspectives and new approaches to action. Another key aspect is the exchange of ideas and networking with key players worldwide.

What makes the tandem model special for you?

For me, the greatest added value of the tandem lies in the unique combination of academia and practice. I can gain further experience in teaching and research – particularly in working with students – whilst at the same time contributing to pressing future issues facing the sector through practical involvement in international media development cooperation. This combination broadens my professional and personal horizons and creates valuable opportunities for my future career development.
