Learning by teaching - ghosts learn to programme

Geister lernen programmieren

Wednesday 29 November 2023

An exciting intergenerational theatre project called "Hotti on stage" presents "Ghosts in Downing Street" on stage in January 2024. This play is all about the next generation of ghosts, who are less interested in traditional haunting and more interested in computers and the internet.

Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg (H-BRS) welcomed the members of the theatre group "Hotti on stage" as part of a special event. The initiator was Dr Charlotte Echterhoff from the Hackerschool gGmbH, whose family is also part of the ensemble.

The members of the ensemble immersed themselves in the world of programming as part of the rehearsals and preparations for their roles. The Hacker School gGmbH and H-BRS are working together on this project to introduce the actors to various programming languages - always in the context of the theatre play.

In the HTML course, participants learn how to create their own website so that the Prime Minister's butler and the actress "Birdie" can present their performances online.

In the Scratch course, the students develop games based on the characters in the play, such as a game in which the grandmother has to avoid doors. One participant in the HTML course, Franziska, is enthusiastic: "I especially liked the tinkering until you achieve the desired result. I finally know what's behind those ominous lines of code that you often see in films when you're 'hacking'!"

Prof. Dr Thorsten Bonne (H-BRS) is actively involved in the collaboration with the Hackerschool and the theatre group "Hotti on stage". What inspires him about this format? The simple and convincing idea of the Hacker School and the opportunity for his students to learn what he considers the most important skill for a successful career: target group-orientated communication!

The ensemble is looking forward to a large audience:

Geister in Downingstreet”, a modern horror comedy by Stefan Schroeder, will be brought to the stage by HOTTI on stage. The four performances will take place on Saturday, 13 and 20 January and Sunday, 14 and 21 January at 3 pm in Haus Menden.
