Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences (H-BRS) has once again been recognised as a Fairtrade University by Fairtrade Germany and will now hold the title for a further two years. For a successful application, universities must demonstrate their commitment to fair trade on the basis of five criteria. These include the formation of a steering group that organises fair trade campaigns and events on campus. In addition, fair trade products must be offered in the campus catering and at meetings and events.

"I am delighted to be honoured once again as a Fairtrade University," says University President Marion Halfmann. "It makes it clear that sustainability and fair trade at H-BRS are not one-off actions, but rather characterise a basic understanding that is supported by the entire university."

At H-BRS, the diversity management team oversees the Fairtrade activities. The H-BRS initiative "Respect! Time for Diversity, Time for Sustainability" initiative organises fair trade and sustainability campaigns throughout the year. This year, these included the continuation of "Diversity Creates", the international handicraft and sewing event, which focusses on sustainable handicrafts. The Bonn Filmfair will also be back on campus this year when the documentary "Bigger than us" is shown on 13 November together with Fairtrade Town Sankt Augustin. In addition, activities such as the Sustainability Action Year or student projects, such as a podcast episode on the topic of Fairtrade University in the summer semester, reflect the breadth of commitment at H-BRS.

The H-BRS was first recognised as a Fairtrade University in 2019. The initiative for the application came from students, who also founded a Green Office to support the university on its path to greater sustainability.

"The recertification as a Fairtrade University underlines that fair trade and sustainability are firmly anchored in our university's self-image," says Sarah Friedrichs, Head of Diversity Management at the H-BRS. "We want to actively contribute to the creation of a fairer and more sustainable world and continue to encourage university members to get involved. Because each and every one of us can make a contribution to promoting fair trade."
