Tram route 66 not only connects Bonn with the Rhein-Sieg district, but also Stadtwerke Bonn (SWB) with Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg (H-BRS). A partnership for the ‘Career Express’ now highlights the opportunities that both institutions aim to capitalise on.

SWB Bus and Bahn, in collaboration with H-BRS, has launched a ‘Career Track’ series that follows Lena’s journey from her studies at the university to starting her first job at SWB. The campaign for the ‘Career Express’ was developed in-house by Stadtwerke Bonn and the university.

What Lena does today

Lena initially studied for a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration at the university, followed by a Master’s in Innovation and Information Management. During this time, she was able to gain her first professional experience as a research associate at H-BRS through a project management role at SWB Bus und Bahn. It was such a good fit that she now works as a team leader, contributing to major projects such as the Bonn cable car, amongst other things.

“I was happy to agree to be a testimonial for the Karrierebahn campaign, even though it’s a bit strange to see myself pictured so large. For me, starting my career with the university and SWB worked out perfectly; perhaps the campaign will inspire others to take a similar career path,” says the 39-year-old.

Further comments on the collaboration

SWB Group Managing Director Marco Westphal outlines the various areas of overlap between Stadtwerke and the university: “Our joint agenda includes topics such as artificial intelligence, hydrogen and the recruitment of skilled workers. These are crucial for the sustainability of the city of Bonn and the entire region. Our aim is to drive innovation forward and intensify the knowledge transfer between industry and academia.

Not the first collaboration

“Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg has been working successfully with Stadtwerke Bonn for several years. We want to further deepen this collaboration in future and are currently in close dialogue with one another to this end. Our practice-oriented degree programmes and our research strengths mean there are many points of contact,” says University President Marion Halfmann. “SWB and H-BRS are united by a shared commitment to and within the region; this makes this partnership particularly productive and effective.” For example, there are existing links with the university’s Institute of Technology, Resource and Energy-efficient Engineering (TREE).

SWB Energie und Wasser and BonnNetz have, together with H-BRS, modelled the potential routes of hydrogen pipelines designed to connect the power stations in Bonn to the core hydrogen network. SWB also regularly exhibits at the Enterprise Day and, as part of this careers fair on the Sankt Augustin campus, presents itself to H-BRS students as an attractive employer in the region, so that there will be even more success stories like Lena’s.
