Project: Farmers’ Chess Meets Artificial Intelligence
As part of the externally funded project ‘Mittelstand-Digital Zentrum Fokus Mensch – AI Trainer’, we use a specially developed serious game to provide an accessible and motivating introduction to the topic of reinforcement learning. Students take on the role of a learning AI agent themselves and discover, step by step, how intelligent systems make better decisions through trial and error, feedback and experience.
Learning through experience
The serious game demonstrates how innovative university teaching can convey complex topics in an accessible way. Through this playful approach, theoretical content is linked to practical experience and actively explored.
The hands-on approach promotes an understanding of fundamental AI methods and creates a motivating learning environment in which knowledge is not merely imparted, but experienced.
Why is this exciting?
The project demonstrates that AI can be understood not only through programming, but also through play. Students benefit from an active learning environment in which they can experiment for themselves and discover connections.
What the project offers:
- An accessible introduction to reinforcement learning
- Complex AI concepts explained simply
- Active learning rather than passive listening
- High levels of motivation through playful elements
- A practical understanding of modern AI methods
- Lasting learning outcomes through hands-on experience
How the game is used
Peasant Chess is regularly used in face-to-face sessions and online workshops. It is played in pairs at a bar table using simple, physical game materials. No technical requirements are necessary to run the activity – just a brief introduction by a supervisor.
Working together for innovative AI education
The project is part of the externally funded project ‘Mittelstand-Digital Zentrum Fokus Mensch – AI Trainer’ and will run from 2023 until the end of 2026.
