When asked to reflect on their recent trip to Nijmegen in the Netherlands, our students overwhelmingly cited the people they met as the highlight of their experience. This sentiment speaks to the warm welcome and hospitality that our partner university, HAN, extended to our group of twelve students from the Department of Natural Sciences and three university representatives. During our two-day visit, we had the opportunity to engage with HAN's faculty, staff and students, forging connections and gaining insight into their academic community.

The itinerary was packed with a variety of activities, including a visit to the impressive Biocentre laboratory, where students learned about cutting-edge research and innovations. A tour of the campus gave us a better understanding of HAN's facilities, and many students said that they enjoyed getting a feel for student life there. Students also appreciated the opportunity to sample Dutch cuisine and learn about Dutch culture. One student noted that visiting the laboratory was an amazing experience.

Beyond the formal programme, students enjoyed the chance to explore the charming city centre of Nijmegen in the evening and on Saturday, discovering its rich history, culture and entertainment options. Many students commented on how much they valued having free time to explore the city and spend time with their new friends from HAN. Interacting with students from another institution broadened their perspectives and fostered new friendships.

This trip was particularly significant as it marked a milestone in our long-standing exchange programme with HAN, established in 2006, which is now celebrating its 20th  anniversary. The exchange programme has helped students gain insight into how research in their field is conducted across the border, as well as providing a unique cultural experience. We are grateful for the warm reception and enriching experiences that HAN provided, and we are looking forward to hosting HAN faculty, staff and students in Rheinbach in June.
