H-BRS staff participates in 14th UEED Africa Conference in Ghana
It was also a floor where senior UCC leaders shared their experience and student and worker representatives could voice their concerns, as well as a marketplace where culture, crafts and arts met the conference audience. This conference took place on 15th and 16th of September 2026 at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) in Ghana and gathered more than 400 people to discuss how to build resilient ecosystems for Africa’s digital and artificial intelligence future.
The conference series was first established in 2012 as a milestone of the cooperation between Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences (H-BRS) and the hosting UCC. This year, H-BRS was represented at the conference by Prof. Christoph Zacharias, Dr. Oghenekome Umuerri, Dr. Brian Mathebula, Marco Ettelt and Mariana Ochoa Moreno, among others.
The opening program reflected the conference’s international and cross-sectoral character. A welcoming ceremony included remarks came from representatives including UCC Vice-Chancellor Prof. Denis Worlanyo Aheto, H-BRS Vice President for International Affairs and Digitalisation Prof. Dr. Teena Chakkalayil Hassan, and the Provost of the College of Humanities and Legal Studies at UCC Prof. Dr. Daniel Agyapong. Representatives of the student body were also able to address the audience, such as: Emmanuel Acheampong Nana Agyei, for the Student Representative Council and Abdullah Muniru, for the Graduate Students’ Association of Ghana. The keynote was held by Member of Parliament Hon. Dr Kwamena Minta Nyarku, representing the Cape Coast North Constituency.
H-BRS researcher Mariana Ochoa Moreno contributed to the conference’s discussions by actively participating in the session on digital transformation, artificial intelligence, innovation and infrastructure. There, she presented a methodological challenge of her ongoing PhD project and reflected on academic concerns regarding the ethical use of AI for comparative media analysis in the Global North and Global South. The academic presentations and welcoming remarks were complemented by a cultural performance, including drums and dance, by The Odikro Royals Dance Group performing Infante Adowa, a dance by the Akan people of Ghana. Over two days, UEED became a meeting place, in which diverse forms of knowledge converged into dialogue: academic research, institutional expertise, civil society advocacy, as well as cultural expression.
