Research project at a glance

The aim of ALBERO is to develop concepts and technologies for the safe integration of alternatively fuelled vehicles into RORO ferry services. Alternative propulsion systems such as electric vehicles and battery-powered cars as well as alternative fuels such as natural gas and hydrogen are to be considered. The project will develop technical, structural and organisational measures to enable safe transport and (for electric vehicles) safe charging during the journey.

Project Description

The aim of  Albero isto develop concepts and technologies for the safe integration of alternatively fuelled vehicles into RORO ferry services. Alternative propulsion systems such as electric vehicles and battery-powered cars as well as alternative fuels such as natural gas and hydrogen are to be considered. The project will develop technical, structural and organisational measures to enable safe transport and (for electric vehicles) safe charging during the journey. In addition to suitable pre-sorting concepts during boarding, special parking and charging spaces with innovative hazard detection and safety systems are to be developed and implemented and tested in initial laboratory and field tests. Furthermore, recommendations for effective control measures in an acute hazard situation are to be developed. Moreover, training concepts and teaching materials for RORO ship crews will be developed.
The sub-project of the H-BRS aims to develop gas-sensing systems to monitor the occurrence of leakages of fuel from alternatively powered vehicles or the possible development of gas during faulty or improper charging of drive batteries on ferry decks or charging stations on RoRo ferries, which can lead to a hazard from escaping gases or to fires.
