Today, women study just as often as men, but the air gets thinner after the first degree: The proportion of women drops with each further qualification level. This can have consequences for how and what research is done. Studied women also earn less than their male colleagues as a result. Unfortunately, women are also at a disadvantage when it comes to access to funding ("funding gap"), especially in the start-up scene.

Since doctoral scholarships have been awarded at the H-BRS, the Equal Opportunity Office has therefore been specifically involved in promoting the careers of young female scientists. In the context of the "Gender-equitable university", a doctoral scholarship was last advertised and awarded in 2022. The Graduate Institute of the H-BRS is in charge of the selection process.
