SaSeRoS-2012 - the winning teams
The Intensive Programme SaSeRoS-2012 coordinated by Prof. Norbert Jung has finished in Valencia with a competition for the "safest" robot.
67 Students of the five European universities Metropolia (Espoo, Finland), HiST (Trondheim, Norway), HvA (Amsterdam, Netherlands), UPV (Valencia, Spain) have worked for two weeks on safe and secure robots based on open software. Among them ten students from our own Department of Computer Science and five from the Department of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Technical Journalism (EMT).
In ten international teams the participants have competed for the safest, i.e. "best robot" and the "best specification". The Lego NXT robots were in this case exemplary for the application of potentially dangerous robots.
First the students had to decide on the framework conditions: should the robots be used in a factory hall or a supermarket, in a train station or maybe in a hospital? Will the use be during day or during night time? Will only trained personnel come into contact with the robot or will there be a public audience, maybe even children and disabled persons?
Is the robot supposed to recognize stairs as an obstacle and what kind of obstacles (inanimate or living) should it react to?
After choosing the working environment the students had to decide by employing a risk graph the suitable security level and - while applying the right norms - to take measures for a risk reduction.
After answering all of these questions the participants of the competition implemented the safety-critical applications on the NXT Lego robots.
The international jury - Thomas Breuer, Tore Berg Hansen, Ferry Rietveld, Simo Silander, Angel Valera - one person from each of the participating universities - that has awarded Team 06 the prize of "Best Robot" and therefore winner of the competition. The basis of the jury decision were the appraisal of the robot specifications as well as the presentation and the safety assessment of the robots. Team 09 won the Best Specification Award.
