Design, Control, and Performance Evaluation of a Bidirectional Single-Stage On-Board Charger for Electric Vehicles

The project is researching and developing a single-stage, bidirectional 22-kW onboard charger for electric vehicles. Simulations are used to analyze and optimize suitable circuit topologies and control strategies in order to achieve high efficiency, low switching losses, and reliable power transfer in both directions for vehicle-to-grid and vehicle-to-home applications.

Short description and additional information

Single-stage On-Board Chargers (OBCs) are gaining significant attention in electric vehicle (EV) applications due to their distinct advantages of having fewer components, reduced system cost, and higher power density compared to conventional two-stage architectures. In the scope of this project, the viable topologies to realise a single-stage OBC will be systematically analysed through a comprehensive literature review and detailed simulation studies. Key topologies such as Matrix converter, Dual Active Bridge (DAB), CLLC resonant converters, and integrated PFC-based isolated converters will be evaluated based on efficiency, complexity, and switching stress. Further, the selected topology will be utilised to develop a dedicated optimal control algorithm considering the bidirectional power transfer capability, which is essential for emerging Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) and Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) applications. The control design will focus on achieving soft-switching across a wide load range, ensuring fast dynamic response, and maintaining high conversion efficiency. Additionally, a comprehensive simulation framework will be established to assess the steady-state and transient performance of the proposed converter under various operating conditions, including grid disturbances and load variations. This project will result in a validated design methodology and a comprehensive control architecture for a 22 kW single-stage bidirectional OBC, providing a robust theoretical foundation that supports practical implementation, experimental verification, and system scalability.
