B3D Big Bang to Big Data

Research project at a glance

Big Bang to Big Data (B3D) is an interdisciplinary research, technology, and education alliance for data-intensive radio astronomy. The "cluster" links the scientific potentials of radio astronomy and data science. Funded under the Profiling 2020 funding program, the cluster aims to pool distributed expertise and resources and establish the data science expertise that radio astronomy research still lacks.

Project Description

To pool their expertise, eight institutions in North Rhine-Westphalia have joined forces under the leadership of the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy (MPIfR) to form the "NRW Cluster for Data-Intensive Radio Astronomy: Big Bang to Big Data". In addition to the MPIfR, the Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences and the University of Bonn are involved in the project. The state is funding the project with up to three million euros.

H-BRS is contributing its expertise in interactive and visual analysis of large data sets, artificial reality representation and artificial intelligence. It also has many years of experience in training in computer-aided visual information processing, or visual computing. In 2012, she founded a research institute specifically for this purpose, the Institute of Visual Computing (IVC). In an interdisciplinary team, about 50 scientists work on interactive environments and visualization with a user-oriented approach. The IVC is a partner for local companies, for which it also carries out basic research projects using state-of-the-art technology.
