Department of Engineering and Communication
Applied learning in the Department of Engineering and Communication
In the Department of Engineering and Communication (IWK), you will learn a wide range of skills that go beyond the theory found in textbooks. The lectures lead directly into practical exercises, projects and laboratory work, which are developed and carried out in collaboration with companies. You will also work on tasks and challenges drawn from real-world working environments and apply the results directly in practice. Many of our lecturers bring their professional experience from business and industry to the university.

Work placement semester
You can incorporate a work placement or a semester abroad into your degree programme. This gives you the opportunity to put your theoretical knowledge into practice and gain professional experience.
The choice is yours:
✅ Internship – either in Germany or abroad
✅ Semester abroad – at a university abroad
The practical semester begins after at least four semesters of study and lasts for at least 20 working weeks. It can serve as your entry into the professional world and also offers direct interaction with experts in the field.
💡 You’re not on your own in your search: with partnerships, job boards and personal advice, you’ll find a suitable internship placement. You choose a supervisor from the academic staff who will support you, advise you and assess your work throughout the semester.
