Outstanding final theses: Two graduates from Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences (H-BRS) have been honoured with the sponsorship award from the Association of German Engineers (VDI) Cologne. Federica Ricucci from the Faculty of Applied Natural Sciences was awarded first place, while Jana Dankert (Faculty of Engineering and Communication) came third. Second prize went to Lilian Anouk Singhofen from the TH Köln.

H-BRS graduate Federica Ricucci has won first prize in the VDI Sponsorship Award for her master's thesis in the Biomedical Sciences degree programme at the Faculty of Applied Sciences. Using modern laboratory methods, she investigated the functional effects of a genetic change in a child with a severe inflammatory disease. The findings made an important contribution to the classification of the disease and enabled a targeted adaptation of the treatment.

Ricucci's work: from the laboratory to everyday clinical practice

The supervising professor Oskar Schnappauf praised her thesis as exceptional: "This work is an example of how findings from laboratory research can flow directly into medical treatment, from the analysis of the genetic material to the specific therapy for the patient. It is precisely this path from the laboratory to everyday clinical practice that makes the potential of modern biomedical research visible," he says. Federica Ricucci, who is now doing her doctorate at the University Hospital Bonn, is delighted that her work has been recognised. "The prize is of particular importance to me. It shows that medical issues go hand in hand with advances in the engineering sciences and therefore emphasises the relevance of interdisciplinarity in diagnostics."

Ricucci's award-winning master's thesis is entitled "Functional Characterization of a Novel Homozygous Proximal Intronic Splice Variant in a Patient with DNase II Deficiency". The first place of the VDI sponsorship award is endowed with 2000 euros.

Another H-BRS graduate, Jana Dankert, has been honoured with a VDI sponsorship award. She won third prize, worth 500 euros, for her bachelor's thesis on "Parameter and state estimation of batteries using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy" in the Sustainable Engineering Science degree programme.

Dankert's work on battery cells

Batteries are a central component of the transformation of the electrical energy system. Their reliable operation requires precise information about their condition. The aim of Jana Dankert's work was to apply methods to determine the state of charge and the total capacity as an indicator of the service life of battery cells. To this end, she developed a corresponding model and parameterised and validated it using real measurements on battery cells. "This work has made it possible to improve the estimation of the service life of battery cells," praised the supervising Professor Marco Jung. Nevertheless, the award came as a surprise to the prizewinner herself. "I saw the work on my Bachelor's thesis more as a personal challenge, with the aim of further developing my technical and methodological skills. I didn't expect my work to be honoured to this extent and I'm very pleased about it," says Jana Dankert. She is now studying for a Master's degree in Sustainable Engineering at Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences.

Praise from the VDI Cologne

"Our young talent is our future. This work shows how much innovative strength, scientific depth and social relevance there is in engineering," said Paul E. Krug, Deputy Chairman of VDI Cologne. Every year, the VDI honours outstanding engineering theses with the sponsorship award. According to the VDI, the jury assessed the submitted theses using a clearly defined points matrix, which takes into account both the scientific claim and the practical benefit.
