14 libraries from the Rhein-Sieg district establish a network for education and culture

Opportunity for rural areas

One practical example of a district-wide, open library education system that supports citizens of all ages is the Onleihe. The digital service enables needs-based access to e-books, audio books and digital magazines. Yesterday, "Onleihe 3" was officially reopened after a complete overhaul - with a presentation in rhyme form by Joachim Linden (University and District Library) and Martina Sief (Siegburg City Library). District Administrator Sebastian Schuster emphasised the importance of this digital service: "The "Onleihe Rhein-Sieg" is a central component of the university and district library as a modern place of education," he said. It offers a great opportunity for rural areas in particular: it enables flexible, location-independent access to media around the clock, even after work and at weekends. "The assumption of operating costs by the Rhein-Sieg district is an expression of our equalising and supplementary function. The Onleihe is an important service for our citizens in the Rhein-Sieg district as a strong educational and economic area. After all, we live from people gaining qualifications and keeping pace with rapid social and professional developments," says Schuster. 

Appreciation for the work of the libraries

The great importance that the district and local authorities attach to the work of the libraries was also demonstrated by the fact that not only District Administrator Sebastian Schuster attended the official launch of the network, but also representatives of all participating municipalities, including the mayors Christian Lanzrath (Alfter), Max Leitterstorf (Sankt Augustin), Daniel Phiesel (Rheinbach), Sven Schnieber (Meckenheim) and Guido Vierkötter (Neunkirchen-Seelscheid). The managers of all the libraries presented their facilities in a kind of "marketplace", where the focus was on what the new network also wants: the exchange and joint development of ideas.

People of all ages benefit from comprehensive access to education, knowledge and culture. Children and young people discover information, digital media and new learning worlds in a safe, inspiring environment. Students and professionals benefit from expert advice, workstations with modern equipment and support for research, further education and academic work. Senior citizens experience libraries as inviting places to meet, where exchange, digital advice and the joy of lifelong learning take centre stage. Families use libraries as meeting places close to home where education, leisure and culture come together.

"With the Network for Education and Culture, public and academic libraries are joining forces for the first time to promote knowledge and culture together," says Sabine Heusinger von Waldegg, Head of Library Learning and Information Services at the University and District Library. "This alliance creates a bridge across all stages of life - from first reading to research. This creates a strong foundation for lifelong learning that supports and inspires people in every situation in life."

A total of 14 libraries are involved in the "Network for Education and Culture". The idea for the initiative came from the university and district library, which is also responsible for organising the network.
