Getting More Girls Involved in Digital Topics of the Future: Participating in “Jugend hackt 2036”
From May 8 to 10, 2026, the “Jugend hackt 2036” event took place at eva e.V. in Cologne-Ehrenfeld. Once again, the Equal Opportunities Office at Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences supported the participation of female students with the goal of increasing the proportion of girls at the event and inspiring girls to pursue computer science and digital technologies. This year, six female students participated together over the weekend.
“Jugend hackt” is a project that encourages young people between the ages of 12 and 18 to tackle social challenges through coding, technology, and creative ideas. Under the theme “Jugend hackt 2036,” participants developed visionary ideas and digital solutions for the world of tomorrow. Working in teams, they created a wide range of projects focused on technology, sustainability, and social cohesion.
The students’ joint participation not only boosted the girls’ confidence in technical fields but also created a safe space for exchange, mutual support, and new experiences. It is precisely these kinds of positive experiences that are crucial for breaking down barriers and making STEM subjects more accessible to more girls.
Through its commitment, the Office for Gender Equality at Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences aims to continue helping attract girls to STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) and increase their visibility in technical fields. By supporting events such as “Jugend hackt,” the goal is to encourage more girls in the long term to contribute their own ideas, develop technical skills, and try their hand at future-oriented digital fields.
