Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University is "Bestes Maschinenhaus"

Wednesday 6 May 2015

Yesterday (5 May 2015) there were great cheers among the representatives of Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University’s Department of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Technical Journalism (EMT). VDMA President Dr Reinhold Festge announced that the department had won the 'Bestes Maschinenhaus 2015' competition (best power house). The Sankt Augustiners’ ideas, which are aimed at improving tuition in order to achieve better study success, have been rewarded with a prize worth €100,000.

Prof. Dr Iris Groß, Vice President for Tuition, Studies and Further Education and member of the Department of EMT, said, "The department has been awarded this prize because the students of engineering are at the centre of the tuition we give. The high proportion of projects in what is termed the ‘4+1+4+1+4+1’ model, in which a four-week period of tuition is each followed by one project week, enable students to see the purpose of learning at an early stage of their studies." According to Prof. Groß, discussions on ways of attaining high standards in tuition have always been very important to the department.

Tuition then received a great boost from the university-wide Pro-MINT-us project, which is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education. Many ideas for improvements in research, which are compiled in the VDMA application, were generated within this project and have been implemented with the aid of funds from Pro-MINT-us.

The winners’ concept convinced the jury thanks to its strong practical orientation and the way students are included in real-life scenarios. In addition, students acquire skills in project management and presentation techniques alongside their subject-related expertise. Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University’s team was victorious over five other finalists.
