About the Lecturer

Martin Smith is a product driven entrepreneur focused on marketplaces that increase transparency in opaque markets, further sustainability within firms, or create better broad-based ownership among value-creating stakeholders. He is currently working on building CommonShare, an online platform that hopes to make sustainable commerce competitive.

Smith is also a PhD Fellow studying firms with distributed ownership and policies that encourage wealth distribution through firms at United Nations University-MERIT / Maastricht University in collaboration with the schools of business and governance. Specifically, his research is focused on how Coase´s theory of the firm breaks down in large scale digital marketplaces, the effects this has on marketplace participants, and the implications for wealth inequality.

He is the former founder/co-founder of Justmeans, 3BLMedia, SynZenBe, Le Souk, and StartingBloc and an active angel investor through NextGen Venture Partners. He was the first CRO at Noodle Education. Smith has lived around the world while working as a social entrepreneur including in Bangladesh, India, the Dominican Republic, the United Kingdom, Spain, and the Netherlands.

He is particularly interested in impact investing, sustainability, broad-based ownership, sustainable value chains, digital marketplaces, experimental economics, and governance. He holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and a BA in Economics from the University of Chicago. Outside of work, he is an avid reader, kitesurfer and mountain hiker.

The event is open for all students interested in entrepreneurship either as current or potential founders.

The session is scheduled for Wednesday January 20, 2021 from 10.00 am - 11.15 am
