BRS Motorsport again presents new teaching methods at IEEE EDUCON

BRS Motorsport IEEE EDUCON

Tuesday 20 June 2023

At this year's IEEE EDUCON in May, three members of the BRS Motorsport team in Salmiya, Kuwait presented another teaching method that takes extra-curricular engagement as a starting point for new curricular elements. As in the past, the contribution emerged from activities of the Race Academy around Prof. Dr. Dirk Reith, the team's Faculty Advisor.

The IEEE Global Engineering Education Conference (EDUCON) has been held annually since 2010 and provides an opportunity for scientists, engineers and students to present their work, publish results, exchange ideas and network for future scientific and industrial collaborations. This year, EDUCON, which rotates between central locations in IEEE Region 8 (Europe, Middle East and Africa), was organised by the American University of Kuwait (AUK).

This time, team members Dennis Günther, Alexander Rundau and Prof. Dirk Reith reflected on their experiences with the "Cost - and Production Management" course for students of all engineering degree programmes (Bachelor), which was launched for the first time in the summer semester 2020, and presented it in the sense of a best-practice role model at AUK. The lecture dealt with the following: Interdisciplinary, complex projects with practical relevance offer students many opportunities to expand their knowledge. For engineers, such projects can therefore also be an additional motivation to acquire non-technical competences and soft skills that they can use in their professional life. The core element of the new teaching approach is therefore to incorporate these non-technical aspects of the Formula Student competition into the regular subject curriculum and to weave the underlying theory into the experience gained from practice.
