Project Description

Public discourse is dominated bymultiple crises. The perception and interpretation of crises, i.e. what constitutes a crisis, how it arises and what consequences can be derived from it, are always determined by social, political and historical contexts. Social movements play a central role in crisis discourse by making crises visible and generating pressure for action through protest. Since 2018, the climate justice movement (CJM) in particular has intensified debates on climate change. Parts of the CJM, such as Last Generation, have established confrontational forms of action such as civil disobedience in addition to mass demonstrations. The research project examines the development from moderate to confrontational forms of protest. The analysis at the individual, collective and discursive levels aims to contribute to a better understanding of the motivations and dynamics of these protest practices.
