The transition from school, vocational training or work to higher education is an exciting time. On the one hand, this change can be associated with joy and excitement, but on the other hand, it can also bring worries and stress. We present five strategies that can help you ease into this new phase of your life.

Give yourself time to settle into your studies and at H-BRS. Starting out in a new system always means that names, locations, abbreviations, customs and much more will come at you like a wave of new information in a very short amount of time. Taking in and processing all this information takes energy. This can lead to you feeling very tired at the end of the day, and sometimes irritable or anxious. These are normal reactions to significant changes in life.

2. Establish routine and structure.

It is worthwhile to establish good routines and structures for yourself right from the start. In addition to your studies, it is important to set aside time for socialising, hobbies, relaxation and exercise. A weekly schedule can help you gain orientation and keep track of your basic needs.

Work together towards academic success.

The first few weeks of your studies offer many opportunities to connect with fellow students. Take advantage of these opportunities, because studying together is a better experience. However, be sure to maintain a good balance between time spent with others and time spent on your own. Sometimes you need a moment of retreat before you can approach others again.

Make mistakes and learn from them.

“Good enough” is a helpful motto for healthy progress through your studies. You are at university to learn and develop. This naturally involves making mistakes and things not working right away. Give yourself credit for trying new things and wanting to learn from your mistakes, instead of always demanding perfect achievements from yourself.

We encourage you to ask lots of questions. Don't be shy about approaching lecturers and staff at contact points to get support. We know how complex university and studying can be, and we are happy to support you!
