The 15th Bonn Science Night on Thursday, 21 May, and Friday, 22 May, with its forward-looking motto "Diagnosis: Future", also refers to the motto of the Science Year 2026, which is "Medicine of the Future". At Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg (H-BRS), research is being conducted from various disciplinary perspectives on key issues relating to medicine and health in the future. At the Science Night, the Institute for Functional Gene Analytics (IFGA) at H-BRS will be presenting its biomedical research to the public.

The IFGA scientists can be found on both days in tent 12 in the "Tent City of Knowledge" on Münsterplatz. It will be open on Thursday, 21 May 2026, from 9 am to 6 pm, and on Friday, 22 May 2026, from 9 am to 11 pm. A total of 27 institutions will be taking part in the Bonn Science Night.

Four researchers will be giving talks

In addition, four IFGA researchers will be giving talks on Friday, 22 May 2026 to provide insights into their work. All lectures are free of charge and can be attended without registration. The lectures in detail:

  • 18 to 19:00: Professor Mirle Schemionek-Reinders: "Learning today to treat cancer better tomorrow"; location: Haus der Bildung, Room 1.56 (1st floor), Mülheimer Platz 1
  • 18 to 19: Professor Jörn Oliver Sass: "Biomedical research: inborn errors of metabolism"; Location: Haus der Bildung, Saal (1.OG), Mülheimer Platz 1
  • 20 to 20.45: Dr Oliver Rauh: "Electricity in the body" - lecture on ion channel research; location: Haus der Bildung, Room 1.56 (1st floor), Mülheimer Platz 1
  • 21 to 21.45: Professor Oskar Schnappauf: "DNA Detectives" - lecture on the exciting world of medical genetics; location: Haus der Bildung, Saal (1st floor), Mülheimer Platz 1

Researching the molecular basis of diseases

The Institute for Functional Gene Analytics (IFGA) is an interdisciplinary research institute at Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg. Scientists from the fields of human genetics, molecular biology, structural biology, biochemistry and bioinformatics analyse the molecular basis of rare and common diseases. One focus is on analysing genes, proteins and cellular processes that play a role in rare hereditary diseases, including metabolic disorders, autoinflammatory diseases and other monogenic diseases. The aim is to better understand biological mechanisms and develop new approaches for diagnostics and therapy.

The Science Night

The Science Night is organised by the Science staff unit in the Office for Economic Development of the City of Bonn in close cooperation with the economic development agencies of the Rhein-Sieg district and the district of Ahrweiler and the University of Bonn.
