2. Departments
The university is divided into departments, the basic organisational units of the university.
The organs of the department are the dean and the departmental council. The department regulates its organisation through departmental regulations and issues the other regulations required to fulfil its tasks. In addition to the dean, the members of a department are the full-time university staff who work predominantly in the department and the students who are enrolled on a degree programme offered by the department. Further information on the department, dean and departmental council can be found in sections 26 to 29 of the NRW Higher Education Act (as a PDF at the bottom of the page).
4. Student Body
Student Parliament (StuPa)
All students elect the Student Parliament from among their number as their supreme decision-making body. The tasks of the student parliament are set out in the student statutes.
General Students' Committee (AStA)
The AStA represents the Student Body both within the university and externally. It implements the resolutions of the student parliament and deals with day-to-day administrative matters. Officers can be appointed for individual tasks with the approval of the student parliament.
Executive committees and student councils
All students in a department elect five members to the executive committee from among their number. This body represents student interests at departmental level and externally. The student parliament provides the executive committees with money to carry out their tasks.
Further information can be found in sections 48 to 57 of the NRW Higher Education Act (as a PDF at the bottom of the page)
5. Administration
The university's administration is headed by the Chancellor and is divided into five departments and the Law and Compliance staff unit.
The employees in technology and administration are employees working in the university administration, the departments, the scientific facilities or the central service facilities who are responsible for services other than academic services (see section 47 of the NRW Higher Education Act).
Departments
- Facility Management, Construction and Safety (administrative unit 1)
- Human Resources (administrative unit 2)
- Finance and Purchasing (administrative unit 3)
- University Planning, Organisation and Controlling (administrative unit 4)
- Student Affairs and Student Advice Centre (administrative unit 5)
- Legal and Compliance staff unit
The university administration ensures that the university's planning, administrative and legal tasks are fulfilled in accordance with legal requirements. In doing so, it must work towards the economical use of budget funds and the economic utilisation of university facilities. The university administration is also responsible for the administrative matters of the university's bodies and committees.
In the spirit of good governance, the university administration is also responsible for providing structures and processes to ensure that teaching, research and transfer tasks are carried out efficiently and in a transparent and trustworthy manner that involves all stakeholders.
7. Staff units
The two staff units Law and Compliance and Communication and Marketing are directly assigned to the President's Office. The Communication and Marketing staff unit is a staff unit of the President. Its core tasks include press and public relations, science communication, web editing and administration including social media, image and video production, internal communication, event management and corporate design.
The Law and Compliance staff unit is a staff unit of the Chancellor and thus part of the administration (see above), which is divided into three teams. The legal affairs department clarifies legal issues within the university, the data protection officers ensure that data protection regulations are complied with and the internal audit examines the university's business processes and transactions according to criteria of regularity, economic efficiency and expediency of administrative action.
The legal affairs department is responsible for the legal affairs of the university
