"Maschinen und Atmosphären": H-BRS funds open access monograph for the first time

Andreas Sieß Maschinen und Atmosphären Dissertation Veröffentlichung

Thursday 6 February 2025

The open access publication of “Maschinen und Atmosphären: Zur Ästhetik des Virtuellen bei E.T.A. Hoffmann” by Andreas Sieß at transcript Verlag was the first monograph to be funded by the H-BRS Publication Fund and the Graduate Institute.

In his work, Sieß uses the literary work and poetics of E.T.A. Hoffmann, one of the best-known representatives of German Romanticism, to show that the aesthetic conception of virtual environments has been discussed since at least 1800. The core thesis of his dissertation is that the virtual must be negotiated from a media-historical perspective.

Since 2022, researchers at H-BRS have been able to apply for financial support for journal articles published in Open Access. Funding is available via the H-BRS Publication Fund, the DFG (German Research Foundation) funding program and, for doctoral students, additionally via funding from the Graduate Institute.

Funding opportunities for monographs since 2024

Since 2024, it is also possible to apply for financial support for monographs published in Open Access. This support is also provided by the H-BRS Publication Fund and the Graduate Institute. We are very happy that Andreas Sieß was the first to make use of this support for his doctoral publication.

An overview of the funding options and information on the application process and funding conditions can be found on the intranet. Here you can also watch a short video on the different open access funding programmes.

The library's research services will be happy to answer any questions about Open Access and publications.

Background

The publication of scientific articles in open access journals is becoming increasingly important. Open Access means that the articles are freely accessible after publication. However, researchers are faced with costs for the open access publication of research results. In order to promote free access to scientific information, H-BRS supports researchers through the central publication fund.
