Why do people do certain things? How do they make decisions? When and under what conditions are they prepared to cross boundaries? And how does this relate to corporate culture in a professional context? These are questions that interest Dr Vivien Veit. "I became interested in criminal law very early on in my studies because this is where life happens. It's close to people," says the lawyer. After working as a commercial lawyer for 15 years, she is now switching to teaching as her main profession and will be a professor at Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg from September.

University President Marion Halfmann presented her with her certificate of appointment.

Professor Vivien Veit will teach business law and private law at the Department of Management Sciences in Rheinbach. In the future, she will focus on the area of compliance. There have already been initial enquiries about supervising theses in this field. "I have always been interested in teaching," she says, "I have trained trainee lawyers and apprentices at the law firm." Over the past eight years, she has also held teaching positions at the universities of Aachen and Bielefeld as well as at the Fresenius University of Applied Sciences in Cologne on the topics of compliance and white-collar criminal law. Now the lawyer wants to devote herself mainly to teaching, but also work in the law firm on the side. "It is important to me to bring my practical knowledge into teaching. The graduates then bring it back into practice."

Students should understand the legal way of thinking

Through practical teaching, students of economics and business psychology should understand how lawyers think so that they can recognise potential problems in their field of work at an early stage. Veit also wants to teach them the legal language and the process of the sometimes very complex legal examinations. The new professor is very much looking forward to working with the budding business psychologists and colleagues from this field - because, like her, they are also very interested in the "why?" and "how?" behind human decisions.

Master's in International Business Law

Veit was born in Lower Saxony and lives on the Lower Rhine. She studied law in Düsseldorf and Münster. After completing her legal clerkship at Mönchengladbach District Court and her second state examination, she obtained her doctorate with a thesis on bribery offences. She then worked as a lawyer specialising in commercial criminal law, compliance and internal investigations in two law firms. She also obtained the title of "Certified Investigation Expert" in Berlin and last year completed a Master's degree in International Business Law (LL.M) at Columbia University in New York.

Wrote several specialised books

In the USA, people always ask her for a professional "fun fact", she says. For her it is: Book. Whenever a topic is particularly important to her, she writes it down - specialised books on the topics of "Compliance and internal investigations" and "Compliance culture and corporate ethics" are already available. And there are already plenty of new ideas.
