Workshop series during Girls' STEM Year inspires with diverse programme
The participants gained exciting insights into various STEM fields. The programme included workshops from the Max Planck Institute for Neurobiology of Behavior, the sk Foundation for Youth and Media of Kreissparkasse KölnBonn, and the DasDigiDings.e.V. association. In addition, numerous workshops took place directly at the university. In addition to offerings from the departments of engineering, communication, and computer science, the Equal Opportunities Office also participated with its own workshop.
Among the guests at the university were “AI Makes Medicine” and “ROBOVERSE – robotics at school,” who brought their mobile robotics systems with them. The focus was on practical work with mBots2, which were programmed by the participants, made to communicate and dance, and controlled over an obstacle course. The programme was supplemented by sensor applications such as noise traffic lights and the control of industrial robots. The practical tasks promoted technical understanding and creative solutions in a playful way.
A key objective of the workshop series was to provide the students with guidance for their future educational and career paths. The different formats and topics provided low-threshold access to STEM content and clearly demonstrated the diversity of technical and scientific fields of activity. Through exchanges with experts from universities, research, and industry, the participants gained insights into real job profiles and learned that STEM professions shape the future and at the same time require creativity, problem-solving skills, and analytical thinking—skills that women can contribute in a special way.
Thanks to the dedicated support of teachers and cooperation partners, the students gained their first practical experience, particularly in the field of programming. The workshop series helped to strengthen interest and self-confidence in dealing with STEM topics, thus making a lasting contribution to the advancement of young women.
