Natural Science taster days at H-BRS - Wednesday, 8 April and Thursday, 9 April

Life Sciences - Im Labor - Fachbereich Angewandte Naturwissenschaften

Wednesday 4 March 2026

Determining blood groups or tracking down unknown substances in the chemistry lab: During the natural science taster days at Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg (H-BRS) in Rheinbach, pupils aged 16 and over can gain practical insights into study subjects during the Easter holidays. On Wednesday, 8 April 2026, and Thursday, 9 April 2026, they can get to know the Bachelor's degree programmes "Sustainability Chemistry and Materials" and "Applied Biology". In addition to practical work, there will be taster lectures and Q&A sessions with students. Registration deadline is 1 April 2026.

8 April: Sustainable Chemistry and Materials

On Wednesday, 8 April 2026, 08:50 to 15:45, the focus will be on the Sustainable Chemistry and Materials degree programme. After the taster lecture "Plastics and sustainability - do they go together?" by Professor Mandy Gieler, it's off to the lab. The imaginary case: during a clean-up operation on the banks of the Rhine, a container of chemicals was found that had obviously been disposed of illegally. The pupils now have to analyse it more closely. "On the trail of ions... detective work in the chemistry lab" is the name of this programme item. This is followed by the "Taster in Materials Science" project and a Q&A session with students. The Bachelor's degree programme in Sustainable Chemistry and Materials is all about developing innovative processes and new materials for a resource-conserving future. The course is admission-free and is designed for six semesters.

9 April: Applied Biology

There will be a practical insight into the Applied Biology degree programme on Thursday, 9 April 2026, 08:15 to 16:30. Participants will set up a PCR reaction, analyse gels under UV light and determine blood groups. There will also be a taster lecture and the opportunity to talk to students and professors. The six-semester Bachelor's degree programme in Applied Biology is taught in English and focuses on the modern disciplines of biology: Cell Culture, Immunology and Genetic Engineering. The programme focuses on clinical research, drug development and quality assurance. The taster day is held entirely in German.

Both taster days for students aged 16 and over take place at the Rheinbach Campus of Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg, Von-Liebig-Straße 20. Participation is free of charge, but due to the limited number of places, an application via the H-BRS website is required. The registration deadline is 1 April. A certificate of participation will be issued after the taster day.
