Since August 2006, not only students have been trained at the Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences in Rheinbach, but also trainees. One of the two training occupations offered at the Rheinbach campus is training as a biology laboratory technician.

Focus of training

  • Providing biological expertise and basic biological knowledge for biological work in the various laboratories at the university
  • Biochemical, microbiological, cell biological, molecular biological, genetic engineering, histological and immunological activities
  • Providing knowledge in chemical, physical and analytical laboratories
  • Preparing, carrying out and evaluating practical experiments, analyses and measurements

Training requirements

  • Very good to good secondary school leaving certificate, vocational baccalaureate or Abitur
  • Good grades in biology, maths, German and English as well as a good general education
  • Strong interest in and above-average understanding of scientific processes and contexts
  • Good powers of concentration and observation

Location and duration of the vocational training

The training is a so-called dual training programme in cooperation with the Bonn/Rhine-Sieg Chamber of Industry and Commerce and the Berufskolleg Kartäuserwall. The in-company part of the training takes place at the Rheinbach campus, the school-based part at the vocational college in Cologne.

The training lasts three and a half years with the option of shortening it to three years. The examinations are taken at the Bonn/Rhine-Sieg Chamber of Industry and Commerce. Payment is based on the collective wage agreement (public service, TV-L, West, trainees).

Job advertisement

One or two training positions are filled each year. The vacancies are advertised at the beginning of the year on the Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences website, via the usual web portals and in the local press. Spontaneous applications outside of the advertised period cannot be considered.

The team of trainers

In Biology, a total of four people make up the team of trainers. There is always one main trainer responsible for each trainee/apprentice.

The contact person for information/queries about training is Claudia Kleinfeld.
